Ground Anchors Karekare

Karekare Surf Life Saving Club. Use of soil anchors on a steep volcanic ridge.

TGE carried out site geotechnical investigations and produced recommendations for the design of the new clubrooms. This included designing the required excavations to construct the foundations and base slab.

The new clubhouse building is located at the base of a steep volcanic ridge with very loose wind-blown sand piled up against the toe of the slope. Excavating and temporarily supporting the excavated sand required top-down installation of a pattern of soil anchors driven into the slope as the excavation proceeded.

Close onsite coordination was required with the specialist contractor who encountered rock outcrops at the edges of the excavation, requiring adjustment to the excavation support.
