Deep Excavations
NZ International Convention Centre.
TGE were engaged to improve the excavation methodology to help accelerate excavation without compromising the stability of the perimeter retaining walls which were being progressively anchored as the excavation proceeded.
In addition, the team were also asked to analyse the effect of the large mobile cranes required to install the tower cranes from the edge of excavation, to confirm that the operation did not over-stress the retention works.
A methodology was designed to temporarily excavate below the footings of the adjacent TVNZ building without compromising its stability.
This excavation was one of the deepest carried out in Auckland. The tight construction programme meant that the excavation sequence often required deep localised excavations to install particular foundations and slabs at various levels. Installing the tower cranes often required large mobile heavy cranes with outriggers imposing very high loads at the edge of the excavation.
