Temporary Excavations Middlemore AMHU

Middlemore AMHU Temporary Excavations.

TGE were asked to design temporary excavation support to the lift pit.

This project was interesting because the soft ground conditions allowed sheet-piles to be utilised but the excavation depth meant that internal struts were required.

Strut design was undertaken in close collaboration with the contractor to ensure that the struts were clear of work carried out within the excavation and that important pre-cast elements could be lowered into position without clashing with the struts.

A further factor was that one side of the excavation was open to a cut-and cover tunnel resulting in large out-of-balance loads on the excavation walls. Our analysis proved that these out-of-balance loads could be resisted without additional props on the end-walls of the opening thus reducing unnecessary temporary works.
