The mutual benefits of internships

At TGE we love to support the next generation of engineering thinkers and doers. Interns bring energy and a fresh set of eyes to the job and in return they get the chance to be immersed in real geotechnical engineering work.

Last summer we had Jack Anderson join us and Jack was everything you would want in an intern, practical with a 'can-do' attitude, an open mind and willing to learn. Here is Jack's intern experience in his own words;

"Kia ora. I’m Jack, BE(Hons) student at the University of Auckland.

As 2022 exams drew to a close, I began researching summer internships. Having thoroughly enjoyed CIVIL200 (introduction to geotechnical engineering), I reached out to Neil at TGE. He and I met for breakfast and immediately hit it off. I was intrigued by his innovative ideas for the renewable energy sector and chose to come on board the following Monday.

My four months at TGE were fantastic. I worked on exciting and meaningful projects – such as developing a system for designing solar array foundations. This project exposed me to cutting-edge finite element modelling software, hugely strengthened my Excel skills, and provided me with knowledge of American structural codes.

I enjoyed the small-team culture. Our early morning training sessions, and drinks around the corner on Friday afternoons, were fun and helped me get to know the team. I had the flexibility to work on some interesting non-technical initiatives, such as TGE’s social media presence and a donation drive for Ukraine.

It was a summer well spent!"
